The Transitional Timer

A Device that Aids Activity Transitioning for Children within the Autism Spectrum

Designer:  Noel A. Zenga

Abstract

The Transitional Timer is designed to assist therapists guide children from one activity to another.  This device is a 60-minute timer designed to provide sensory feedback for timed activities.  Once the timer is set, it provides visual queues to the amount of time left before activity completion.  Upon project completion, the Transitional Timer was presented to KidzPlay Therapy Center in Londonderry, New Hampshire.  Many of the children at KidzPlay have been diagnosed within the Autism Spectrum and have difficulty transitioning from one activity to another.  The trouble transitioning between activities can cause varying degrees of distress to these children.  Timed events are currently managed by an egg timer that is difficult to see or hear in a large therapy room.  The Transitional Timer is intended to provide critical time data to therapists transitioning children through their activities.
