The Head Activated Wheelchair

A device that will help people control wheelchairs with their head

Designer:  Lewis R Perez

Abstract

The Head Activated Wheelchair (HAW) was designed to provide the client better control of electric wheelchairs.  This device replaces expensive components in electric wheelchair systems with a more financially feasible and easier to use system, allowing any user to control the wheelchair with more accuracy and considerable less physical effort. The designed system consists of a head array made of multiple pads located on a support bar around the user’s head and a digital interface referred to as the “LP digital interface” which communicates with the original Wheelchair’s digital box and controller. The device is placed over the head of the user and connected to a digital box on the wheel chair. Once the wheelchair is turned on, it is ready for use and the client uses his or her head to control the direction the chair travels.
