Foot-Controllable Text Processor

Designer: Sean R. O’Melia

Abstract

The objective of the Foot-Controllable Text Processor (FCTP) was to provide the client with a streamlined and sophisticated text processing system. The client suffers from cerebral palsy and lack sufficient motor skills to use many communication devices. For the past several years, he has used an Apple computer and a single pushbutton switch to form next messages. The FCTP will enhance the client’s text processing ability through a sophisticated tree structure enabling him to select words and build sentences and paragraphs by the manipulation of a large pushbutton, horizontal toggle and vertical toggle switches through word menus. Moving the toggle switches in a certain direction will change the position of the cursor within the menu. Pressing the large pushbutton switch will execute the operation. A custom designed “textMaker” program was coded and built with Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 development environment. The client is able to save or delete his work.
